Now Android Users Can Close Their Inbox – AwayFind comes to Android Market! by Jared Jul 27

This probably won’t be of interest to all 125 million Android users out there, but for the ones that really want relief from their inboxes, we’re here to help.

AwayFind Notifications - Shortened

Today we announce AwayFind for Android. If you’re an existing AwayFind user, you’ll now be able to route urgent emails to your Android phone or tablet. And, unlike with our (very popular) SMS alerts, you can read the whole message and even reply without a visit to the distracting world of your inbox.

We’ve made the setup super easy:

1. Setup a Gmail or Google Apps account in less than a minute (or setup Exchange or IMAP accounts on the web).
2. Then just decide which people should trigger an alert.
3. Done.

AwayFind - My Important People Shortened

You will be alerted with an Android push notification when urgent messages from these senders arrive, so you can stay away from your inbox the rest of the time. You can still use the other AwayFind tools you love, such as our Gmail plugin and calendar integration–both of which take just a minute or two to setup on the web.

Grab AwayFind free from the Android Market!

And for those who haven’t discovered our great iPhone app, that’s available here.

Use a calendar? You’ll love AwayFind’s new “People I’m Meeting Today” Smarts by Jared Apr 26

Ever had a meeting canceled over email…but you missed it since you were already on the way there?  You’re going to love this.

Today we’re excited to announce “People I’m Meeting Today” alerts.  Whether you use Google or Outlook Exchange for your calendar, the setup takes all of 5 seconds.

You can configure it on the web:

You could also grab the latest iPhone app and navigate to Settings—>People I’m Meeting Today

People I'm Meeting Today Calendar Alerts in AwayFind iPhone app

It works automatically—there’s nothing to setup or think about.

If you and Keith are meeting soon and he sends you an email, that email will turn into an AwayFind alert (see first image above).

When you create appointments in your calendar, just note the full name or email address of the person you’re meeting with.  (Calendar invitations sent over email do this automatically).  This can be in the subject, body, or invitations area of the calendar appointment, but here’s an example:

image

AwayFind looks at your calendar to determine who you’re meeting with today (from the example above, it would look for an email from Bill Gates or Keith Ludlow or even Microsoft partnership).

If any of those people email within a few hours of the appointment, that email turns into an alert.  You can specify the exact time period—from 1 to 36 hours.  Here’s the email that trigered the alert:

So many ways this saves you.

AwayFind’s got you covered for when people email to…

  • Say they’ll be late
  • Change the location at the last minute
  • Ask for you to bring something to the meeting.

You don’t even need email on your phone—we can send these alerts over SMS, IM, or even call you.  Let us know what you think.  And close your inbox!

AwayFind + Exchange = smooth as butter. by Jared Apr 26

If your company uses Microsoft Exchange, fear not—we’ve got you covered.  We now support Exchange 2003, 2007, and 2010.  We supported it before, but now it’s super smooth and reliable.

If you’re a new user, it should be straightforward to get yourself setup.  If you’re an existing user, just visit https://orchant.awayfind.com/admin/setup_accounts.php, choose your Exchange version, and enter your email address:

image

  • If you use a newer (2007-2010) version of Exchange (with AutoDiscover) we’ll just need your password (which we store encrypted).
  • If you use Exchange 2003 or do not have AutoDiscover enabled, we’ll likely need a few more settings, like the URL you use to check your webmail (OWA server) or your Exchange Web Services address (EWS).

Then you’re all set.  You can manage AwayFind from awayfind.com or with our iPhone application.

Bye-bye Beta, Upgrade for fast alerts, business-class reliability, and a crazy discount by Jared Dec 8

In the past 8 months, over 10,000 of you have entrusted AwayFind  (Orchant) to notify you of urgent emails.  We’ve grown pretty good at it, and are coming out of beta today.  Now is the time to upgrade (or sign up) and lock in our early discounts, good through the end of the year.

NOTE: Subscription plans are not yet available for Google Apps Marketplace customers, more on that below.

Why Upgrade Now?

Faster Notifications.  You’ll receive alerts 10x faster on our Yearly Pro plan, with an average wait time of about 60 seconds between when an urgent message is received and you’re notified.

Awesome SMS.  If you’re in the United States, subscription users will receive messages through a full SMS gateway, which means messages will all come from one number, faster, and much more reliably.  If you’re out of the US, you’ll need a subscription plan to receive SMS.

Voice.  Subscription plans offer voice delivery of urgent messages.  Yep, AwayFind will call you and read your urgent message, anywhere in the world.

Security and Branding.  SSL security, your own logo on your contact form, redirecting to your own website.  These are things business users demand.

Crazy discount on WOW features.  Over the next few months we’ll release several features that will kind of astonish you.  We’ll KNOW when a message is urgent based on the content of the email and the context of your message history and upcoming calendar appointments.  If you sign up before Dec 31, you’ll lock in a heavily discounted rate for these features.  You won’t be disappointed.

And if you use Microsoft Outlook or Exchange, you can lock in a discount for when they’re fully supported shortly.  Both will go through beta testing prior to their paid release.

What’s Changing for existing users?

We’ve tried not to take anything away, but instead to add premium features for our new subscription plans.  These are the features that will affect existing users after 30 days:

International SMS and voice calls will no longer be available for free.  (We were pretty clear on this one from the beginning—you don’t want to see our phone bill!)

Email checking frequency will be 3x per hour, with an average wait time of 10 minutes to be alerted about an urgent message.  We tested all sorts of times during the beta period and 10 minutes seemed to work very well for those who use AwayFind for personal use.

Generally speaking, the business-class features (multiple-email account support, SSL, Exchange) are only available with subscriptions.  Our Gmail plugins, iPhone app, IM and Twitter delivery, and similar features continue to be available with a free plan.  Email Gateway SMS within the US are still available for free, for up to 30 messages per month (though it’s not as reliable as the new SMS we are offering for US users).

What About Google Apps Marketplace Users

Lucky you!  Google has been refining the checkout process for the Marketplace, so we’re going to delay a little while on offering subscriptions for group plans.  For now, all Google Apps Marketplace users will have access to the Yearly Pro features.

If you’re a Google Apps Marketplace administrator, feel free to contact us about discounts and promotions for early Marketplace customers.

Charging, and Taking Care of Those You Care About

Charging isn’t so bad.  We have a really amazing team who we need to take care of, and with your support we can live the dream of changing the way people communicate.

If things get real good for us, we’ll return that to you with a product that better helps you to spend more time away from your inbox and with the people you care about, too.

So, please, go ahead and try one of our subscriptions.  I’m so thrilled how far AwayFind has come, and I’m looking forward to what’s possible together in the years ahead!

Get Out of Your Inbox with AwayFind for iPhone by Jared Dec 7

There’s actually a lot of things that we’ve launched with today’s updates, and many that we’ll be finishing up in the coming weeks.  Stay tuned for another post on those soon.

And, since we actually were one of just a handful of companies to launch Contextual Gadgets, we put together a fancy professional press release, check it:

AwayFind App and Contextual Gadget Now Available on the Google Apps Marketplace

AwayFind is now in Public Beta! by Jared Apr 17

We’re excited to announce that AwayFind is now available without a waitlist!  Yep, Public Beta is NOW!  We’ve made the announcement today in Mountain View, CA while demo’ing at Under The Radar.

While we’ve received a lot of press lately and announced quite a few features, today we want to let more people in to try it.  We’ve spent a lot of time listening to our users, and we have a ways to go, but we want to give more people an opportunity to escape their inbox.

As a bit of context to how we got here, here’s a slide from today’s event:

image

As you can see, AwayFind spun out of a consulting business, and was in fact a side project in response to the needs of both our team and our customers. In 2008, we released a small product (AwayFind 1.0) that got a bit of attention and made us some money.  But then we spent some time listening and starting working on a completely new version of AwayFind, which we placed into private beta in November 2009.

In the process of all this, AwayFind went from being a “small thing on the side” from the consulting business to the sole focus of our team.

If you’ve been waiting to try AwayFind, you can signup today.

We’d love your feedback and would be happy to answer any questions—you can email jared at awayfind or Tweet us @awayfind.

Updates: Firefox & Chrome plug-ins for Gmail users, oAuth, and Super Fun Press! by Jared Apr 12

The last few weeks have been exciting here at AwayFind,  We released a number of crucial features for Gmail users, had some fantastic coverage, and got a LOT of new users.

AwayFind  ♥ Gmail

Our goal is to help everyone escape their inboxes, but rather than provide basic support to a lot of providers, we want to provide a phenomenal experience for the platforms we support.  And in the last few weeks we’ve made that clear with our deep support for Gmail (and we’ve got more coming, too).

Check out our AwayFind for Gmail plug-in, which is available as either a Firefox Add-on or Chrome Extension:

Existing AwayFind Users – Install It From Here

The other big Gmail improvement is that we now support Gmail (IMAP) via oAuth—which is a fancy way of saying we can connect to your Gmail account without storing your email password.  It makes for a faster setup process, more security (we won’t request or store your Gmail password), and no need for you to update AwayFind if you change your password in Gmail.

Perhaps it’s the new features…but whatever it is, we’re thrilled that people are talking about AwayFind.  We’ve had over 130 articles about us, but in the last couple weeks we had some coverage we’re particularly proud of.

At ReadWriteWeb, Sarah Perez wrote a thorough AwayFind review.  As Sarah’s been a long time user of AwayFind (thanks!!), she did a great job examining what’s changed with AwayFind Orchant.  (Also cool: the article was syndicated in the New York Times)

While we’ve also been on some popular sites in the last couple weeks (like DownloadSquad and wwwhat’s new, a South American site which sent us hundreds of signups), our most exciting coverage was a 2-minute segment by CM&’s technology correspondent.  This story aired on a major prime time television station in Columbia, and sent us more users than any other to date.  Check it out:

We really hope these new features make a huge impact.  Thanks so much for entrusting us to keep you away from your inbox!

The Core of What’s New in AwayFind Orchant by Jared Mar 12

AwayFind Orchant is a completely different product than AwayFind 1.0.  I wanted to take a moment to ensure you were familiar with what’s changed and why.

We’re solving the same problem–keeping people away from email without worrying about missing anything–but our approach is completely different.  Then again, it’s exactly the approach our users asked for.  There were two things our users requested most:

  • The ability to get certain people’s messages automatically turned into alerts (SMS or otherwise)
  • More control over who received auto response messages, and how often they went out

We’ve got both of these features now, in the form of:

1. Filters

Filters monitor your email accounts for whatever or whomever you’re looking for…and then can alert you when those messages arrive.  Here’s a quick demo:

2. Intelligent Auto Responders

Intelligent Auto Responders allow you to send an auto response once every 180 days (or however often you’d like), rather than in response to every message you receive.  Better yet, you can set custom messages to go to specific people, and prevent some people from ever receiving an auto responder at all.  Here’s more:

Those are our biggest changes, and they required us to grow from a small contact form that sent you SMS’s, into an intelligent application that directly interacts with your email accounts.  In brief:

  • AwayFind 1.0 allowed others to reach you with their emergencies
  • AwayFind Orchant allows you to be reached from the people or topics that you consider to be urgent

Fortunately all of the AwayFind 1.0 features still exist so you get the best of both worlds.  But now you don’t have to worry about missing a message from your boss, family, or an important client—you get to choose what’s urgent!

Along with this, AwayFind got a redesign and a bunch of new contact methods—we can now notify people anywhere in the world through SMS, Voice, IM, or Twitter DM.

We’ve seen that these changes have made a huge impact on our thousands of customers.  But many more helpful features will be coming soon!
